Weymouth and Portland are situated at the heart of England’s
first natural World Heritage site. This 95-mile stretch of
‘Jurassic Coast’ is of outstanding universal importance. The varied
geology includes Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods and
there’s no better way to see this stunning coastline than from the
sea.
The impressive Georgian seafront provides a stunning backdrop to
the fine golden sands of Weymouth Beach and the beautiful clear
waters of the Bay.
The heart of Weymouth is the traditional
Harbour, situated just a few minutes walk from the town centre and
beach and is full of character from the harbour mouth – where the
sheer walls of the Nothe Fort rise up from the sea, to the inner
harbour where the marina is a safe haven to scores of visiting
yachts and motor boats,
The outer Harbour
leads to the symbolic old inns and family attractions.
The area has a lively social scene including a Multiplex cinema,
superbowl, nightclubs, bars and countless inns. Weymouth and
Portland has many fashionable places to feast, enjoy a leisurely
dinner alfresco or a lazy lunch around the seafront or harbour. No
resort along the south coast has so many attractions or such a
choice, and many of the attractions are ‘all weather’, and open all
year round
Portland is steeped in history and heritage with tales of
shipwrecks and smuggling. Portland’s most impressive feature is
Chesil Beach, one of the finest pebble banks in the world.
Seventeen miles long and over 40 feet high in some places, it’s one
of the south coasts most visited locations. Portland is also
recognised world wide for its stone industry. The famous white
stone has been used in many famous buildings such as New Scotland
Yard, St Paul’s Cathedral, and even the United Nations Building in
New York to name but a few.
For activities to really get your heart racing, Weymouth and
Portland is the place to be. Whether you’re into climbing or
windsurfing, kite surfing or water skiing, for a real adrenaline
rush Weymouth and Portland has some of the greatest activities on
offer. The waters provide the perfect setting for sailing, angling
and diving – a real chance to find your sea legs.
