 Unknown warship
This wreck lies upside down in the middle of the westbound lane of the Casquets traffic separation scheme. Back in 95 we were probably the first divers on her, she certainly is big around four hundred feet long and standing fifty feet above the seabed. We had two boats on station that day the second one Divetime acting as a runner, heading off the ships and warning them as they thundered down the lane (thank the lord for AIS nowadays) First diver up was mixed gas pioneer Alan Yeend who shouted as loud as could on surfacing “It’s the Baden It’s the Baden” sadly it wasn’t and till this day we still don’t know her identity but I think those of us that have puzzled over this for many a year are closing in. Last week myself in Wey Chieftain and Ian Taylor aboard Skin Deeper returned with a band of eager divers and we managed to answer a few questions. She has one rudder, two shafts and several key features were noted such as the shape of the stern and the rolled edge on the deck (Tumblehome) The most significant advance however was the recovery of a floor tile with French writing on it which supports our long held belief that we are probably looking at a French warship sunk as target. Just got to work out which one!!
